On 5/13/09 she gained her new lease on life.  Noel and I felt like she needed something to commemorate this day so we sent her some flowers. Sweet Miss Crickett….

The week started off on a very sad note….my mom’s beloved miniature Schnauzer, Crickett aka Missy Girl,  had to be put to sleep early Monday.

In recent months she had gotten to the point she would not let anyone pet her except on the top of her head…then it had to be her idea!!! She never snapped at anyone or became aggressive, just yelped like you had stepped on her toes or something. The only exception to this was the kids…Erin, Madison, Alexes or Jessica could pet her and love on her all they wanted and she just stood there…guess she knew better than to bite those grandbabies!!!

The same was not true for the groomer. She had gone to Elaine at Berend Brothers to be groomed her whole life, but the last several months were difficult and she would not have any part of being groomed (snapping at and biting Elaine)…almost like her skin was hyper-sensitive. So Mom didn’t force the issue and just let her hair grow out until she became quite scruffy…I thought she looked cute but the hair in front of her eyes had gotten so long it had to have obstructed her view. Mom contacted the vet last week  for their advice to get her to the groomer…they recommended a mild sedative to calm her down enough to be groomed.

On Monday, Crickett was her bouncy self…busting in thru the doggy door, bounding in the house and jumping over the AC return air vent in the floor of the livingroom only to stop in the middle of the floor and wag her stubby little tail as hard as she could!!! 🙂

Mom gave her the first sedative and gave it some time to work per the vet’s instructions and headed off to the groomers. When they arrived Crickett wanted nothing to do with being groomed and snapped at Elaine again. Mom could tell something was wrong so they decided to take her down the road to the vet’s office to get her checked out. Unfortunately, the vet’s recommendation was grim…he said she was in alot of pain and it was time…Mom and Dad had  some time with her, told her good-bye and left the room…they got to see her afterward and saw her at peace and no longer in pain. Losing a pet sucks….

Crickett used to stay with us when Mom and Dad went on vacation and we will miss her when they go on their annual trek this summer. She lived 14 good years and was loved by the whole family. Now she is in Heaven with Pepper and they are running and playing pain free…along with our beloved babies we have lost ourselves…Buddaboo,  Shadow and Murphy (aka Murph-Mop)….they capture a little piece of your heart when they come into your life and take it with them when they are gone.

When I got the call from Mom about the days events, I had already picked Erin up from school. I started crying when Mom told me what had happened and Erin was able to deduct from the conversation that something had happened to Crickett so I was tasked with giving her the bad news. After a good cry she asked me if Crickett was with God…I told her yes and she said “so she is in my heart like Bumpa” (her great grandfather that had recently passed away)…I told her yes, she put her hand on her little heart and said “I can feel her puppy feet”. Needless to say, the waterworks started again…she has such a tender heart. Kids just understand things on a different, innocent level that is wonderful.

The trip back to Texas…

Started the day like I had since I arrived…early, with my laptop and a cup of black coffee!!!

My cousin Kevin was just leaving for work when I got up so I was able to tell him good-bye as well.

Had another nice visit with Erma and thanked her profusely for letting me stay with her on this trip. She has always been one of my very favorite relatives and I love her dearly.

We went to breakfast at Denny’s (WAY better than the ones in Wichita Falls) and then it was off to the airport for my departure. I checked my bag and, since we were pretty early, we sat and did some people watching…that was fun!!!!

It was finally time to tell Erma good-bye….not a fun thing either…I was fine until I hugged her and the tears welled up in my eyes. When I told her that I loved her and she could tell I was crying, she said, “you’re not supposed to cry”….then she did. This is the part that really sucks about visiting family for vacation…leaving.

My flight from Minot to Minneapolis was pretty uneventful until I got to the Minneapolis airport and arrived at gate F16, and after consulting the arrival and departure screens, realized I was departing from gate C22….not EVEN close to each other!!! When I got to the end  of Concourse F and turned the corner to go to Concourse C, I felt like I was in the twilight zone because when I turned the corner, I thought I was in a mall!!!!! I managed to find the signs that directed me to Concourse C and headed out…OMG…it was a LONG DAMN WAY!!! Thank goodness for the moving walkways!!!! I arrived at my gate and still had a little bit of time to spare and catch my breath.

Upon boarding the plane I was seated next to a very nice young lady named Alina from Chicago and we had a nice visit all the way to Dallas, where she was going to visit friends for the weekend…sure helped pass the time. The landing into Dallas was quite bumpy due to high winds and I was never so glad to be back on the ground!!! Noel and Erin greeted me at the airport, we collected my suitcase and were off to Jess and Edwin’s for dinner. They treated us to Red, Hot and Blue BBQ….good call guys!!! It was very yummy and I was very hungry…my Denny’s breakfast wore off a couple hours before!!!

Double E cheesin!!!!

Double E cheesin!!!!

Erin enjoyed her visit with her Jessika and Ehwin!!!!

Two hours on the road and we were home…I think Madi was happy to see her Nana!!!! Even got a hug from Kristen!!! 😉 I think she may have missed her mom too!!!

Now I just need to win the lottery so I can move to North Dakota and see that my Grampa is taken care of properly and treated with the love and respect he deserves!!!!

Day six…Thursday…

This is the last day here with my Grampa…not looking forward to telling him good-bye.

I didn’t pick Grampa up until just before our lunch with Erma and Mardine (Grampa’s sisters) at The Homesteaders today and I could tell when I got there that he was not in a very good mood…mostly because he was dreading the same thing I was. 🙁

We had a nice lunch and visit…even though Mardine was pretty quiet. Erma and I decided that just about everything in the place looked good because we were very hungry!!! I opted for the patty melt, Erma and Mardine had hamburger deluxe (that is what they call a hamburger with everything in North Dakota) and Grampa had the Sr Citizen shrimp (they have a strange idea of tartar sauce too).

After lunch we decided to take one last trip to the cemetary to make sure the flowers stayed put. I got out of the car and went to check them…it was still too wet for him to get out… and when I got back to the car and told him that they were good to go, he was crying again. 🙁 He really misses Bessie and said it upsets him because this is the first time he has not been able to put flowers on her grave since she passed away…I assured him that she understood and that it was ok. It was a very difficult trip for sure.

The new flowers on Gramma's grave

The new flowers on Gramma's grave

We went back to the nursing home and just hung out for awhile. Did some reminiscing about the good times we have had together over the years. I consider myself VERY fortunate to have had this man in my life for over 45 years. I remember being very excited, as a kid, when Gramma and Grampa came to visit!!! Les and I spent two summers with them when we were in our early teens and I have many fond memories of those visits as well. I think that is where I developed my love for cooking…Bessie was an AWESOME cook!!!!  I pattern my grandparenting after these two wonderful people and hope I do half as good a job with my grandkids as they did with Les and I.

After more shared tears…happy and sad…we decided to go downstairs and have pie and coffee before I had to leave. Leaving him is the hardest part of the trip and the part that SUCKS the most…I wanted to pack him up and take him back to Texas with me…I wonder how much paperwork WOULD be involved in that task.   When we got back to the room we visited for a little bit and then the time had come to say good-bye…lots of tears were shed and he told me some very sweet things that I won’t share here…but they will forever be in my heart. I kissed him good-bye and cried all the way back to Erma’s…I sure do love that old guy!!!!

Me and Grampa

The rest of the night was spent packing my stuff for my trip back home…I was ready to go back home but not ready to leave…if that makes any sense at all.

Day five…Wednesday…

Up early again….had a nice leisurely morning with Erma and several cups of coffee!!! Got a call from Grampa when I wasn’t there and he thought I should be. 😀

Picked up Grampa and took a rare trip (for him) to Walmart. He made me call ahead to make sure they had wheelchairs so I could wheel him around in the store. We went to the artificial flowers and immediately picked out some beautiful purple flowers for Bessie’s (Gramma) grave… afterall, it WAS her favorite color!!! We looked around at a few more things…he just likes being away from the home…and then headed to the registers. We are off to the cemetary after lunch.

We went back to see Kim and company at MarCo’s. Kim smiled from ear to ear when she saw us coming in for our third visit in a week. We got a table and decide to have an early lunch…Grampa had a sloppy joe with potato salad (that he raved about) and chips and I had a ham salad sandwich and broccoli cheese soup…both were very tasty and we enjoyed a nice lunch. After we finished eating, I left Grampa at the table visiting with Kim while I went across the shopping center to pick up a few souvenirs and a very special gift. (Love ya Jess) Once I finished my shopping, we bid Kim a fond farewell and Grampa told her he was going to take the bus down to the restaurant from time to time. She told him to let her know when he was coming and she would be watching for him.

Once again, at the cemetary, Grampa was not able to get out of the car due to the soggy ground between the road and gravesite. I managed to get the vase off the headstone and bring it to the car so he could help me arrange the flowers in it. Once I got them put in the vase with the styrofoam I bought, I carried it back to the headstone and used a penny to tighten the screw that holds the vase down. The flowers looked very pretty and I took my camera and snapped a few pictures. When I got back in the car my Grampa’s eyes were filled with tears due to not being able to visit the grave of the woman he loved for more than 54 years and lost over 14 years ago. My eyes instantly filled with tears and we had a good cry together about that wonderful woman….who was married to a wonderful man!!!  In case you can’t tell, these two people have been a very important part of my life…

After the cemetary, we drove around for awhile just taking in the scenery. We decided that Grampa should go back to the home to rest before our special dinner at Erma’s that evening. Erma made a traditional Norwegian dish that is very popular in my family…Krub (pronounced Kroob)…this is a potato dumpling with pork inside boiled to perfection and eaten with a little salt and pepper and lots of butter (NOT a Weight Watchers meal in any form!!).  Grampa ate 2 1/2 and they were DELICIOUS!!!!! Kudos to Erma!!!! I will have to make them for my family soon…we haven’t had them for quite some time!!!

After dinner I turned on my laptop and signed on to AIM and hooked up with a video chat with Noel so he could say hi to Grampa. As luck would have it, Mom and Dad were at the house to bring Erin home from picking her up from school so he got to see Mom and Erin on the video too. But the icing on the cake for Grampa was getting to see Madison on the video and hear her say “Hi Grampaw” as only Madi can say!!! Once he saw her and heard her say hello he was good to go back to the nursing home. When we got back to the home and I kissed him good night he told me that his former neighbor, the nurse, gave him a call the night before to see how he was doing…guess my little visit with her did some good. Little things like that make that man so happy….

Day four…Tuesday…

Up early today…4:45 to be exact!!! Woke up early and called Noel to tell him good morning. Missing my baby!!! I love you, Noel!!

Picked Grampa up at the home at 9:30 to go to MarCo’s for caramel rolls…I could immediately tell that it was going to be a long day because he was pretty pissy when I got there…I think all the running we have done this week so far caught up with him….he IS almost 91 and not used to all this activity but I always ask before we go anywhere and he is always ready. So off to MarCo’s we went…he was happy to see Kim again and when she brought out his fresh baked caramel roll, things got a little better!!!!

Took him back to the home for a little while so he could rest before we were on the go again. In the afternoon, we drove thru Oak Park and Roosevelt park (first time I have seen a swimming pool frozen on the top and a pile of snow beside it when it was 62 degrees outside)…they had a really hard winter here with over 100 inches of snow!!! Kind of embarrassing that Wichita Falls shuts the whole town down for 3 or 4 inches and this place can keep running with THAT much snow!!! Amazing!!! There were alot of people at the park enjoying the nice temps and warm sunshine. Grampa enjoyed the trip thru the parks. After our trip thru the Oak Park we drove down the street where Grampa lived for 27 years and stopped at the apartment building next door to his old one so he could say Hi to the nurse that used to check on him regularly when he lived there. She was not able to come out and see him due to having a daycare in her home now and could not leave them alone so she waved to him from the window and that made him happy. I told her to go by and see him or just give him a call…calls mean alot to him. She said she would…we shall see.

We went to the cemetary to see if it was dry enough to go to my Gramma’s grave but it was still too soggy for Grampa to walk out there. There are several piles of snow on the north side of the section where she is buried and as they melt theydrain right down by her headstone so the ground is going to stay soggy until all the snow is gone. I did get out and walk to her grave and dust the mud off her headstone. There are no flowers in the vase on her headstone so I am assuming they were blown away during the winter…there was evidence of alot of that going on in the ditches in front of the cemetary. I am going to put some on there before I leave. Gramma needs flowers on her grave. When we left the cemetary, he decided it was time to take a painting back to his friend Connie that she had painted years ago and gave to him. He wanted to make sure she got it back in case anything happened to him.  Mission accomplished!!!!

We went back to the home and Grampa got rather ornery and we had a few words…which very rarely happens…a few tears were shed but things were said that needed to be said. He blames my mom and uncle for being in the home….it is a very sad place and I can see why he does not like it there but he is blaming the wrong people and I told him that…he needs to be pissed at the doctor that put him there…not Mom and David. I have never wanted to pack him up and bring him home me more in my life!!!! But since he refuses to leave ND, this is where he needs to be and he knows that now. Pray for me on Thursday when I have to tell him good-bye….it gets harder every time I come here.

We were ok when I left and both felt better about the air being cleared…hopefully tomorrow is a better day!!!

Day three…Monday

Monday was a very good day!!!! I picked Grampa up at 10 and took him to the doctor to get new molds for his hearing aids…did you know your ears and nose never stop growing??? I didn’t….anyway, after about a 10 minute appointment we were outta there and he could hear alot better. In fact, he said they were almost too loud but the audiologist told him he would get used to the new volume level and evidently he has because he has not complained about it again. 🙂

After his appointment, we were off to The Homesteaders again….they do have pretty good breakfast!!  The hostess that works weekday mornings was very surprised to see me walk thru the door and even more surprised and happy to see my Grampa. She has worked at the restaurant for 21 years so has known him for quite awhile…he figured out that day that he has been going to that restaurant for 26 years!! (I told him he paid for part of the building for as much as he has eaten there) The waitress we had was fairly new and did not know him but told him she had heard about him and he was kind of a legend around there!!! That made him feel real good. We had a nice breakfast and got to see pictures of Connie’s new grandson…very cute baby!!!

In the afternoon we went to one of Grampa’s favorite old haunts…MarCo’s restaurant at Town and Country Mall. Before he quit driving two years ago he went there twice a day to drink coffee with his buddies. Kim, the lady that owns the restaurant, was thrilled to see him and greeted him with a huge hug…and he grinned from ear to ear!!!! He got to talk to several of his old buddies and Kim gave us some very tasty brownies!!! When we left there he was a VERY happy old man!!!! Grampa commented over and over on the way back to the home about what a good day we had….two in a row!!!! I have to say that I agree….it does my heart good to see him so happy.

I took him back to the home to get ready for supper and headed back to Erma’s. Erma and I decided to go to the truck stop for dinner. Her son, Kent, works there as head cook and we had a very tasty meal. I had a patty melt and a cup of hamburger macaroni soup…Erma had a hamburger and a cup of soup…both were VERY good!!! After our meal, we came back to the house and got in our comfy clothes and settled in for Dancing with the Stars!!!! Got to talk to Noel and the girls on AIM video for a bit and it was good to see them.

Another great day….
